Spotlight Hour: Catch Wingull and Maximize Your Rewards
This week’s Spotlight Hour focuses on the Seagull Pokémon, making it an ideal opportunity for players to catch a Wingull in Pokémon Go! Regardless of personal opinions on seagulls (some might call them sky pests), Wingull remains a significant Pokémon within the game, particularly due to its evolution into Pelipper, which is quite effective in player-versus-player (PVP) battles.
If you’re not specifically looking to add another Wingull to your collection, this Spotlight Hour also includes an enticing special bonus: double transfer candy!

Catching Wingull with Perfect IV Stats
The current Spotlight Hour offers a fantastic chance to snag a Wingull with perfect IV stats. The term ‘perfect’ refers to a few things based on how a Pokémon is utilized. In Pokémon Go, a ‘perfect’ IV usually indicates a Pokémon with maximum values, quantified as 15/15/15, which is crucial for your 4* Pokédex, raids, and Master League. However, due to CP calculations that utilize three stats, a Pokémon with perfect IVs excels primarily in the Master League.
Although players cannot see a Pokémon’s IV until they’ve caught it, a bit of prior research can help you identify a perfect Wingull by its CP value alone. If you’re at Level 30 or higher, here’s what you should look for in terms of CP for a 15/15/15 Wingull:
- Level 30 (max wild CP) – 656 CP
- Level 35 (max wild CP with weather boost) – 710 CP
The wild CP aligns with your Trainer Level until reaching Level 30. Given that most players are now above this level, this guidance favors simplicity but will naturally differ for those below Level 30.
Evaluating Pelipper in PVP Battles
Pelipper has gained a reputation as a formidable force in the Great League and is adequately competitive in the Ultra League, despite a CP ceiling of 2404. A lot of this can be attributed to its moveset, which ideally features Wing Attack, Weather Ball (Water), and Hurricane. This combination results in a dynamic playstyle that applies significant shield pressure to opponents, especially considering its underrepresented weaknesses (double-weak to Electric and weak to Rock) at the top of the meta.
In the Great League, Pelipper often thrives against Pokémon like Talonflame, Whiscash, and Azumarill, but struggles against Lanturn and Charjabug, among others. Conversely, in the Ultra League, its wins include battles against Virizion and Talonflame, while it often falls short against Registeel and Giratina Altered.
This variability explains why Pelipper is generally favored in lower leagues, though it lacks the necessary stats to compete in the Master League.
Shiny Wingull and Shiny Pelipper Availability
Good news for shiny hunters: there exists a shiny Wingull in Pokémon Go! Both shiny Wingull and shiny Pelipper made their debut during the Safari Zone Yokosuka event in August 2018.
However, it’s crucial to note that Spotlight Hour events, unlike Community Days, do not have enhanced shiny rates. Consequently, if you’re on a quest for a shiny Wingull, you’ll be operating under standard rates during this event, meaning every minute counts!
Appearance of Shiny Wingull and Shiny Pelipper
In terms of aesthetics, shiny Wingull and shiny Pelipper fall somewhat short. Their designs are notably simple, with their shiny versions merely featuring a change to a rather uninspiring shade of green.
While shiny Pelipper stands out slightly more visibly, the overall color scheme has left many fans disappointed.
Additional Tips for Spotlight Hour
In addition to the goal of obtaining a perfect shiny Wingull, there are several practical reasons to participate in this week’s Spotlight Hour. Notably:
The double transfer candy bonus is the most compelling incentive. This boost is active throughout the hour and applies to all Pokémon, making it an excellent opportunity for players looking to expand and enhance their Pokédex. Consider creating a tagging system in your Pokémon storage specifically for this purpose.
It’s advisable to generate a tag labeled ‘Transfer’ where you can consolidate Pokémon you wish to release. Rather than transferring them right away, hold onto them for this special event, enabling bulk transfers that yield significant candy rewards, especially if transferring high-value Pokémon like Mewtwo.
There’s also an increased chance of acquiring Candy XL when transferring Pokémon.
- Additionally, as Wingull is classified as a Water/Flying-type Pokémon, capturing several during this hour will help boost your catch bonus medals.
Please note that Spotlight Hour events are only active for one hour, from 6 PM to 7 PM (local time). Be sure to check back next week for information about the next event featuring the Mantle Pokémon, Roggenrola, and a double evolution XP bonus!
Wishing you the best of luck in capturing a perfect shiny Wingull!
